Living in a small town in North Dakota doesn’t mean your food options are limited! In fact, our little community has hidden gems that serve up a variety of delicious eats for all kinds of cravings. Whether you’re new to town, considering a move here, or just passing through in search of your next meal, this list of my top five local spots—shared in no particular order—offers a great starting point. Each of these places has a diverse menu, but I’ll share my go-to dishes to help you dive right in!

Let’s start with a classic: Budget Burger. True to its name, this spot is where I head whenever I’m craving a no-frills, satisfying burger. My go-to? The jalapeño burger. It’s the perfect balance of bold flavors, with spicy jalapeños and creamy Cajun ranch that elevate the already juicy patty. Pair it with a side of famously delicious fries, and you’ve got yourself a meal that never misses.

When I’m in the mood for sushi or Thai food, James Bon Bon Café is my spot. This isn’t your typical all-you-can-eat sushi joint, but what it lacks in endless plates, it makes up for in quality. My go-to dish here is the Jammy Bowl, a refreshing blend of cucumber, avocado, cooked shrimp, crab stick, and raw salmon and tuna. It’s a perfect option when you want a little bit of everything in one bite. For those feeling adventurous, their Thai menu offers plenty of flavorful surprises to explore!
One of the newer additions to our local food scene, El Valle Taco Shop, has quickly become a favorite for Mexican food lovers. Their menu is packed with variety, and they’re always adding limited-time items to keep things fresh. My go-to? The California burrito. Think of it as a steak burrito taken to the next level, with crispy French fries stuffed inside. It’s a hearty, flavorful option that reminds me of authentic carne asada burritos from the West Coast. For an extra kick, I load up on their salsa bar—it’s a must for spice lovers like me!

If you’re looking for a spot with a touch of elegance, Sabirs is the place to go. Known as the go-to for date nights or special occasions, they also shine when it comes to their lunch menu. My favorite is their prime rib sandwich. It’s everything you could want: tender slices of perfectly cooked prime rib, layered on a soft roll, and topped with optional additions like melted cheese or caramelized onions. My version of this classic always includes a side of golden, crispy French fries.

For days when you want variety and plenty of it, the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet at Kirin House is a winner. They’ve got everything from Orange Chicken to freshly made lo mein, crispy egg rolls, and beef with broccoli. My go-to first plate is a carefully crafted mix: 30% chow mein, 25% sesame chicken, 25% coconut shrimp, 10% beef with broccoli, and 10% sweet-and-sour pork. Even though it’s a buffet, I can’t help but stack a couple of egg rolls on top for good measure. With so many options, Kirin House is the perfect spot to indulge and satisfy all your cravings.
Small towns like Valley City have so much to offer, and these five restaurants prove that good food can thrive anywhere. Whether you’re craving comfort classics or adventurous eats, you’re bound to find something delicious at one of these local gems. I encourage you to check them out and discover your own favorites—who knows, maybe they’ll even become your go-to spots!
